Biceps tendonitis, also known as bicipital tendonitis, is characterized by inflammation and irritation of the tendon which connects the biceps muscle to the shoulder. This tendon is known as the biceps tendon.
Common symptoms of biceps tendonitis include:
- Pain mostly in front of the shoulder or upper arm and it may also radiate down the forearm
- Popping sensation in the shoulder
- Weakness or loss of strength
- Swelling and tenderness around the biceps tendon
- Difficulty with certain arm movements especially when it involves lifting or bending the elbow
Common Causes of Biceps Tendonitis
- Overuse or Repetitive Movements
- Direct trauma or injury to the biceps tendon
- Anatomical Factors such as having a hook-shaped acromion can increase the risk of developing biceps tendonitis
- Age-Related Wear and Tear of the biceps tendon
- Poor Technique in certain activities and sports can put excessive strain on the biceps tendon
