Mechanical back pain is a very common condition that affects the lower back area. It is called “mechanical” because the pain is caused by an abnormal stress and strain on the structures of the spine like muscles, joints, ligaments, and intervertebral discs and not from a specific injury.
Symptoms of mechanical back pain
- Localized pain which may be dull or sharp
- Reduced range of motion
- Stiffness
- Difficulty maintaining certain positions for prolonged periods of time
- Muscle spasm
- Pain that worsens with activity
- Pain may sometimes extend into the buttocks or hip
Mechanical Back Pain is more common in people who relate to the following:
- Age. Back pain is more common with age because the discs in our spine slowly lose their cushioning ability thus making it more susceptible to wear and tear
- Improper lifting and poor posture
- Sedentary lifestyle can weaken the muscles of the spine
- Obesity puts additional stress on the spine
- Repetitive movements and heavy lifting
- Jobs which involve heavy lifting or repetitive motions
- Previous back injury
- Emotional factors and Stress
- Smoking may negatively affect disc health which can increase the risk of mechanical back pain.
- Spinal abnormalities like scoliosis
